## What a Typical Toronto Interlock Project Costs

Per-square-foot prices are easier to use with real sizes. These budgets apply the ranges from the table above to common Toronto layouts:

| Project | Approx. Area | Typical Range (CAD) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Single-car driveway, 10 × 40 ft (common on semis and narrow lots) | 400 sq ft | $7,600 – $8,000 installation + pavers |
| Double-car driveway, 20 × 40 ft | 800 sq ft | $15,200 – $16,000 installation + pavers |
| Front walkway, 4 × 30 ft | 120 sq ft | $2,640 – $5,400 |
| Backyard patio, 16 × 20 ft | 320 sq ft | $7,040 – $16,000 |

Driveway pavers are priced separately because their cost depends on the stone you choose. Where a quote lands also depends on:

- **Tear-out and disposal.** Removing old asphalt, concrete or failed pavers and trucking it away is real cost, especially for thick concrete pads.
- **Site access.** Narrow side yards and backyards reachable only by a gate or laneway mean smaller machines or hand work, which adds labour hours.
- **Soil.** Much of Toronto sits on clay, which holds water. Clay sites usually need deeper excavation, geotextile fabric and more granular base.
- **Pattern.** Herringbone layouts, borders and curves mean more cutting. Large-format and natural stone take longer to lay.
- **Grade changes.** Steps, landings or a short retaining wall on a sloped lot add materials and time.
- **Drainage fixes.** Channel drains, catch basins or regrading are sometimes needed where water now pools against the foundation.

Each of these items appears as its own line in the written quote, so you can see what drives the total and decide what to scale back.

### Choosing Pavers for Toronto Winters

| Paver Type | Strengths | Trade-offs |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Concrete pavers | Widest choice of shapes, sizes and colours. Usually the most budget-friendly option. Single units are easy to replace. | Surface colour can fade over time. Can scale if heavily salted, especially in the first winter. |
| Clay pavers | Colour runs through the whole unit and holds well. Suits older brick homes. | Fewer shapes, harder to cut, and usually priced above concrete. |
| Natural stone | Unique look. Dense stone such as granite is very durable. | Highest cost. Not every stone handles vehicle loads, salt or freeze-thaw equally well, so the specific stone matters. |
| Permeable pavers | Rainwater drains through wider joints into an open stone base, which reduces runoff and puddling. | Needs a different, deeper base. Joints need occasional cleaning to keep draining. Costs more than standard interlock. |

For driveways we use pavers rated for vehicle traffic, 80 mm thick, compared with about 60 mm for patios and walkways. A thin patio paver under a car is a common cause of cracked and shifting units.

## How an Interlock Base Is Built for Freeze-Thaw

When interlock sinks, ruts or heaves, the cause is almost always the base underneath, not the pavers. Here is what goes under a properly built surface, layer by layer:

1. **Excavation.** The old surface, topsoil and organic material come out down to firm subgrade. Driveways are dug deeper than patios because they carry vehicle loads.
2. **Subgrade and fabric.** The exposed soil is compacted. On clay or soft ground, a geotextile fabric goes down so the gravel does not slowly push into the soil.
3. **Granular A base, compacted in lifts.** The base is placed and compacted in thin layers rather than all at once, so it reaches full density. We build walkways and patios on 6 inches of compacted Granular A and driveways on 10 – 12 inches.
4. **Slope.** The base is graded so water runs away from the house and toward the street or a drain. A typical target is about 2% (roughly 1/4 inch per foot).
5. **Bedding layer.** One inch of high-performance bedding (HPB) is screeded to an even thickness. It is not used to fill low spots, because uneven bedding settles unevenly.
6. **Pavers and edge restraint.** Pavers are laid and cut to fit. Edges are locked with pinned edge restraint or a concrete curb, then the surface is plate-compacted.
7. **Polymeric sand.** Joint sand is swept in, compacted and activated with water in dry weather. This locks the pavers together and resists weeds and ants.

### Season and Timeline

Interlock in Toronto is generally installed from spring through late fall, roughly April to November. Base material cannot be properly compacted on frozen ground, and polymeric sand needs dry, above-freezing weather to cure.

Once work starts, a mid-sized patio or walkway typically takes about 3 – 5 working days on site, and a full driveway about 5 – 8. Retaining walls, steps, drainage work or a heated driveway add time. Spring and early summer are the busiest months, so a site visit over the winter leaves room for design, selections and any curb cut or building permit before the season opens.

If your project includes landscape lighting or a heated driveway, the electrical work is done by licensed, WSIB-covered trade partners under an ESA permit, coordinated into the same schedule.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**How much does interlock cost in Toronto in 2026?**
Interlock driveway installation starts at $19 – $20 per square foot, with pavers extra depending on the stone you choose; walkways $22 – $45/sq ft; patios $22 – $50/sq ft. Total project cost depends on size, paver tier, base prep depth, and any drainage or grading work.

**How long does interlock last in Toronto’s climate?**
Properly installed interlock lasts 25 – 35 years in Toronto. The biggest failure modes are inadequate granular base (causing settlement), insufficient slope (causing pooling and freeze-thaw heave), and missing edge restraint. Country Renovations builds driveways on 10 – 12 inches of compacted Granular A (6 inches for walkways and patios), with 1 inch of high-performance bedding and full edge restraint on every install.

**Do I need a permit for an interlock driveway in Toronto?**
Interlock pavers themselves don’t require a building permit. However, City of Toronto Transportation Services issues a separate permit if you’re modifying the curb cut or widening the driveway, and Zoning By-law 569-2013 limits driveway width based on lot frontage and requires a minimum share of the front yard to stay landscaped.

**Should I seal my interlock driveway?**
Sealing is optional but extends colour life and reduces stain absorption. Standard sealing every 2 – 3 years runs $2 – $5/sq ft. Polymeric sand replacement (every 5 – 8 years) is more important than sealing — it prevents weed growth and joint failure.

**Can I install a heated driveway under interlock?**
Yes — and Toronto homeowners increasingly do. The heating cable or PEX is installed under the bedding sand layer, allowing snow-melt operation without altering the visible interlock surface. See our heated driveway guide for cost detail.

**How tall can a retaining wall be without engineering in Toronto?**
Under the Ontario Building Code, a retaining wall more than 1 m (about 3.3 ft) in exposed height that sits next to public property, a building entrance or an area open to the public is a designated structure: it needs a building permit and engineered design. Lower garden walls usually don’t, but any wall holding back a driveway, a building or a steep slope should be engineered regardless of height.

**Is interlock better than asphalt or concrete for a Toronto driveway?**
Interlock costs more upfront than asphalt, but it handles freeze-thaw differently. The joints let the surface flex slightly instead of cracking, and individual pavers can be lifted and relaid after a repair or utility dig with no visible patch. Asphalt is cheaper to install but needs periodic sealing and eventual resurfacing. Poured or stamped concrete cannot be repaired invisibly once it cracks. For more on asphalt options, see our guide to [commercial-grade vs residential asphalt](https://countryreno.com/commercial-grade-vs-residential-asphalt-toronto/).

**Can sunken or uneven interlock be repaired instead of replaced?**
Often, yes. If the pavers are in good condition, the affected area can be lifted, the base rebuilt and recompacted, and the same pavers relaid and re-sanded. Full replacement makes sense when settlement is widespread, which usually points to a base that was too thin or poorly compacted from the start. A site visit will show which applies.

**Is it safe to use road salt on interlock?**
Occasional rock salt is generally fine on good-quality concrete pavers, but heavy use speeds up surface wear, especially in the first winter after installation. Use the minimum needed and shovel before salting. Check the paver manufacturer's guidance, because some products and natural stones are more sensitive than others. A heated driveway avoids salt altogether.

**Will a new driveway or patio change drainage onto my neighbour's property?**
It should not. Grading is planned so surface water flows to the street, to a drain or to soft landscaping on your own lot, not toward your neighbour or your foundation. Where existing grades make this difficult, a channel drain, regrading or permeable pavers can be included in the quote.
